Erasing the Past, Building the Future
Dates: Tuesday, March 31, 2009 through Monday, April 13, 2009
Schedule: Opening Reception: April 3, 6-8 p.m. in the Nybak Wing, San Luis Obispo Art Center, 1010 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo, CA
Stories and photographs will be exhibited of 10 participants who live on the Central Coast of CA and have anti-social tattoos. Many of them will be ex-gang members and/or ex-cons. All of them have the desire to erase their tattoos in order to continue moving forward with positive change in their lives, while further mainstreaming in to society. Their stories will be available in both English and Spanish and will be shared with at-risk youth as well as the general populace. This important project will share a vulnerable populations' unheard stories, providing a vehicle for empowerment for the participants, understanding and compassion with the general public, and will be a valuable teaching tool for adolescents.

Janet Allenspach is a professional visual artist, having received her degree in Modern Media (Photography and Film Making). She has shown in one person shows yearly for the last eight years, as well as in group shows in various galleries and establishments. She volunteers frequently with various civil and humanitarian organizations in the county and state. Ms. Allenspach is the Program Coordinator for the Liberty Tattoo Removal Program (LTR), a division of the Economic Opportunity Commission. LTR is a non-profit focusing on removing anti-social and gang related tattoos from a vulnerable population.
